East Wins League Opener, 3-0! |
Murillo makes it 2-0 against West Warwick! |
The Bolt opened up their 2019 season with a 3-0 victory over the Wizards of West Warwick.
It was the first time since 2015 that Green and White started the league season with a victory; over the past three years, they recorded a tie in their opener. Facing a tough defense, Cranston East broke the scoreless tie with 16:56 left in the first half when senior Kerin Murillo found Luis Gavalo-Puello in the box on a corner kick. While the Orange and Black were scrambling to clear the area, Gavalo-Puello blasted a shot inside the 12 yard line. In the second half, junior goalkeeper, Alex Johnson (12 saves), kept the Thunderbolt off the board for the first 25 minutes. With 15:51 remaining in the contest Gavalo-Puello contacted with Murillo for a 2-0 lead. Murillo took the pass and chipped it over the onrushing keeper for Six minutes later, Murillo took another pass by Gavalo-Puello and chipped a shot in for a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Jorge Avila, who received a great defensive effort by his fullbacks, halfbacks and sweeper Joe Lenk, picked up the shutout with six saves. |

The legacy left by the seniors from the 2019 Cranston East soccer team is one of success. In four years, they won 43 games, two league championships (D-III in 2017 & D-II in 2019) and one state title (2017). In addition, they scored 201 goals. Both marks (wins & goals scored) are the school's best in a four-year period.
